Word.of.the.Week(WoW): “Altruism”

Quote: “We are all here on earth to help others. What I can’t figure out is what the others are here for.” –W. H. Auden

This week’s WoW is the word ALTRUISM

I first heard this word from Larry Ellison, the Oracle CEO.

Altruism simply means the deliberate pursuit of the interest or welfare of others. It was coined from the latin word Alter, which means the other.

It also means the behaviour that helps others survive at your own cost, which implies self-sacrifice or selflessness.

You are an altruist when you align your wellbeing and happiness with that of others. You are happy when others are happy. You are not selfish. You are kindhearted. You think of others. You “do unto others what you want other to do unto you. You simply love…

In summary, live a life of altruism and you will reap the benefits.

Related words:

Benevolent, big-hearted, charitable, good, generous, humanitarian, philantropic, self-sacrificing, open-handed, and so on.

  1. …helping other people gives us so much fulfillment but the average human being is just selfish and self centred… Nice reminder – thanks.

  2. Hmm.. Nice quote — especially the figuring out what the others are here for part.. LOL….. I would wonder though, if it were possible to be perfectly altruistic….

  3. truthfully its right and good in reality it is just way to hard….difficult
some people are jus naturally ‘Unappreciative’ if there’s a word like that
    they never appreciate
then there are those that take these things for granted and all really throw a wet towel on the ‘niceness’ one does
…….truthfully the world will be a lovelier place if everyone threw off that selfish canal nature may be 70 times 7 times a day

  4. @Seye, true words there. Thanks πŸ™‚

@BSNC, lol @ your question.. Why not: “Are people still like that these days thinking about themselves before others?” πŸ™‚

    @akaBagucci, i would wonder too, but i think it’s possible πŸ™‚

@flygirl, I totally agree with you, especially on those that take advantage of ones ‘niceness’, but that really shouldn’t stop all of us from consciously striving to be altruists 70 times 7 times πŸ™‚

@All, wishing you all a great week ahead πŸ˜‰

  5. lol, I so love that post. its quite funny

I wonder how many of us can truly proclaim we have altruistic tendencies. self sacrifice, hmmmm…..aint we too selfish for that?
